ABBA Y AMIGO was born from love — and from pain that was transformed by it.
Our founder, María, started this brand with a simple but profound conviction: the clothing we wear matters. Our skin is our body's largest organ, absorbing the chemicals in the fabrics we put on every day. She wanted to create garments that are good for all of us — at every age — in body, mind, heart, and soul.
But the story goes deeper than fabric.
María's journey to founding ABBA Y AMIGO was shaped by a series of life-altering moments arriving all at once: the passing of her grandmother — a woman who embodied steadfast love — into eternal life, her mother's brain surgery, a young family member surviving a violent crime, an accident that resulted in her own traumatic brain injury. All not too long aafter a dear young friend was diagnosed with cancer.
At that crossroads, María made a choice. After years of pain — including surviving sexual abuse at the hands of those entrusted with her spiritual care — she could have stayed on the path of despondency, resentment, and self-pity.
Instead, she prayed. She prayed with her whole being. She prayed in absolute surrender, perhaps for the first time in her life:
"God, I am mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically broken. Make me new."
And He has been doing exactly that.
ABBA Y AMIGO is part of that renewal. It is María's living response to the call of St. Lawrence, the 3rd-century archdeacon who, when ordered to surrender the Church's treasures, presented the poor, the sick, and the marginalized — declaring, "Behold the treasure of the Church."
Like Jesus Himself, born not in a palace but in Bethlehem — בֵּית לֶחֶם / بيت لحم, the "House of Meat" / "House of Bread" — who emptied Himself entirely out of love of us, and continues to give Himself as the Bread of Life, ABBA Y AMIGO exists to clothe, protect, and honor the people who are too often stepped on and cast aside.
When you wear ABBA Y AMIGO, you're wearing something made with intention — reverencing your dignity, respecting your greatness, and affirming your belonging to Love.
